Media Literacy

Generation M Video:

Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in all of its forms, weather its the print, video or the internet. Extending the definition to also say that it helps people understand the role and our relationship to media in society which is a really important role in citizen ship as well as a responsible producer of media literacy. Messages, people begin to form a message of what something they think really means when it could mean something completely different. For example someone could go watch a movie and think that the message that the director wanted to get across and think something different and way off topic.
Our educational system is flawed, we continue to turn out teachers that do not teach our kids about respect of differences. Working together through media literacy is something people and the society need to work on together. Through my experience our teachers could do better in teaching us about values and different individuality because our community is so small.

What is Media Literacy?

If you break down the two words, media is descriptive of any form of communication, it can be radio, television, computers, billboards, or advertising. Literacy means to read or create, so together it means how you learn to critically read the media weather its a book or radio station and how to produce it. Media literacy is not just about analyzing the media its also about accessing and creating media. We spend 10-12 hours a day with media so it makes sense to talk about it in a systematic and sustained way most of the time. Teaching people to be more critical is something that needs to happen right away, not just as media consumers but to be more powerful media producers as well. Media has a financial interest and that conflicts often with healthy behavior, and that what is needed to be fixed.
